A 37th-minute downpour turned into a halftime evacuation
At Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the Group I match between France and Iraq saw rain pick up around the 37th minute on June 22. Fans pulled on ponchos and stayed in their seats at first, but by halftime the rain had become a thunderstorm and the stadium was evacuated. Because the venue has no roof, both the pitch and the stands had to be cleared: players returned to the dressing rooms and supporters moved to the concourses.
Play did not resume for more than two hours. Counting the halftime break, the total wait reached 2 hours and 11 minutes. France led 1-0 at the break through Kylian Mbappe. After the restart Mbappe added a second, and Ousmane Dembele scored a third, for a final score of 3-0. The win sent France into the round of 32.
It was the first time weather had stopped a match at this World Cup.
Stop for 30 minutes, and if lightning strikes again the clock resets
The call rests on a lightning protocol long used across American sport. When lightning is detected within a set distance of the venue — generally reported as eight to ten miles (roughly 13-16km) — play is stopped for at least 30 minutes. If another strike lands inside that radius during the stoppage, the 30-minute clock starts over. Play does not resume until the storm has moved off and the all-clear is given.
FIFA has not published the exact distance it uses to trigger a stoppage. Asked for specifics, it would only say that in severe weather such as lightning or thunderstorms it follows procedures built on public-safety standards and gives clear guidance to everyone involved, and that it keeps dedicated meteorological support throughout the tournament to sharpen forecasting and real-time decisions.
At a roofless venue, the moment a stoppage is called both the pitch and the seating bowl are emptied. Players and staff head straight for the dressing rooms; fans leave their seats for the concourses and stay there until the danger passes.
The same night, a match 100 miles north started on time
The awkward thing about weather is that nearby venues can diverge. About 100 miles north of Philadelphia, Norway played Senegal that same evening at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Heavy rain fell there before the match, and four hours before kickoff there was standing water on the roads to the stadium — but the rain lifted before the start and the game began on schedule. (Norway reached the round of 32 thanks to an Erling Haaland brace.)
North American summer storms appear and vanish quickly. Even under the same regional forecast, one match is halted and another is not. There is precedent: at last summer's 2025 Club World Cup, Chelsea against Benfica in Charlotte was suspended for about 90 minutes by lightning, fueling debate about staging football in the United States. This tournament's first stoppage sits on that same line.
Japan's finale is under a roof — but the path beyond is unknown
So where does Japan stand? Its group finale against Sweden (June 25 local time, the morning of June 26 in Japan) is at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Along with Atlanta and Houston, it is one of the few venues at this World Cup that can fully control temperature and humidity — pitch included — once the roof is closed. For summer matches the roof is expected to stay shut, with the bowl kept around 22C. The risk of a sudden lightning stoppage, the kind seen in Philadelphia, is low here.
That holds only through the group stage, though. In the knockout rounds the venues change, and an open-air stadium is possible. If a storm arrives there, the same "30 minutes for lightning" routine that applied to France would apply to Japan.
Which venue Japan reaches depends on the Sweden match on the morning of June 26. If an open-air stadium lies beyond it, the lightning rule used in Philadelphia would be used in a Japan match too.
