Moriyasu's stay set for approval today — win or not, Oiwa takes over in March

The JFA board is expected to approve Hajime Moriyasu staying on today. But the deal is a half-year one that runs only to next winter's Asian Cup, and even a title there won't extend it — from March the team passes to Go Oiwa.

The board is set to confirm Moriyasu today

The Japan Football Association puts Hajime Moriyasu's continuation to its regular board meeting today, 23 July. If a majority of voting directors agree, it is approved, formalizing an unusual half-year extension that runs only to the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia next January–February. Reporting says president Tsuneyasu Miyamoto has already told Moriyasu the deal won't be extended whatever happens at that tournament — so even a title would still mean handing over from March.

Oiwa is the successor, doubling up with the Olympic side

The successor has been narrowed to Go Oiwa, who leads the U-21s. He is set to take charge from the March international window while also running the team chasing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That frames Moriyasu's stay as a half-year bridge that carries the side through the Asian Cup and no further.

FIFA's brawl probe rolls on

On the post-final brawl, FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor and is still investigating. The Paredes dismissal that spread worldwide was an administrative glitch on the official feed, later deleted, so there is no automatic suspension. Molina and Ayala are also said to be under review, but no extra sanction has been confirmed. For Japan, moves around the overseas-based players and Asian Cup prep pick up from this board meeting on.
