No matches overnight
No fixtures were scheduled in Japan time on Friday, so nothing moved on the pitch. The semi-finals are long settled: Spain beat France 2-0 and Argentina beat England 2-1, making the final Spain v Argentina. The two beaten sides meet in tomorrow's third-place match.
Mbappe is at 100 per cent
What moved was the press room. Ahead of the third-place match, Deschamps said Mbappe was "doing well" and "at 100 per cent", clearing up the ankle knock he took in the quarter-final against Morocco. In the scoring race Messi and Mbappe are level on eight goals, and Messi is first on the assist tiebreak (four to three). If Mbappe scores even once tomorrow, the order flips before Messi sets foot on the pitch for the final. It is also Deschamps' last match in charge of France.
England plan to rest their regulars
Reece James is a doubt with a muscular problem and Jordan Henderson is out with a wrist injury. Tuchel is expected to change his line-up heavily to manage fatigue, and Kane and Bellingham could be rested. France are reported to be without Saliba, who has a back injury.
A Slovenian referee for the final
One more thing happened: FIFA named Slavko Vincic of Slovenia as the referee for the final, the first Slovenian to take the role. Argentina and Spain are reading the appointment in opposite ways, and we covered why in a separate piece this morning.
For readers in Japan
Japan's tournament ended with the 1-2 defeat to Brazil in the round of 32, early on 30 June in Japan time. There is nothing newly confirmed on the Japan front this morning either. The last two matches will close the tournament without Japan's name in them.
