What the Round of 16 settled

The last-16 is complete and the quarter-final field is taking shape. Brazil, who had beaten Japan 1-2, went out 1-2 to a Norway side inspired by two Haaland goals. Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal lost 0-1 to Spain, Mikel Merino scoring in the 91st minute, ending the 41-year-old's sixth and last World Cup. Co-hosts Mexico also fell, 2-3 to England at the Azteca: Jude Bellingham struck twice in the first half and a ten-man England held on. Morocco (3-0 v Canada) and France (1-0 v Paraguay, a Mbappe penalty), who had gone through first, now meet head-on in the quarter-finals.

Watching a tournament without Japan

Japan went out on 30 June, beaten 1-2 by Brazil, and there are no more Japan matches. But Brazil, the team that stopped them, are gone too. The thread of "how far do the side that beat Japan go?" was cut short, before the quarter-finals, by Haaland's Norway.

Today, and the quarter-finals from tomorrow (JST)

There are no matches today, a rest day in between. The quarter-finals open at 5 a.m. JST tomorrow, 10 July, at Foxborough near Boston, with Morocco v France — the same tie as the 2022 semi-final, which France won 2-0. Norway, who beat Brazil, face England in the last eight. The quarter-finals run across east and west venues from 10 to 12 July.
