While you slept

In the Round of 16, France beat Paraguay 1-0 and reached the quarter-finals, following Morocco through. That settles this half of the draw: Morocco will play France on 9 July at Foxborough, near Boston — a rematch of the 2022 semi-final, which France won 2-0. Co-hosts Canada had already gone out, beaten 0-3 by Morocco, so it is the two sides that came through who now meet in the last eight. France remain unbeaten so far; Morocco, as an African side, reached the quarter-finals at a second straight World Cup.

Watching a tournament without Japan

Japan went out on 30 June, beaten 1-2 by Brazil, and there are no more Japan matches. But Brazil, the team that knocked them out, are still in, and from 5 a.m. JST this morning they are playing their Round of 16 at MetLife Stadium near New York. The result is not yet confirmed as of writing, but how far the side that beat Japan goes is one thread worth following from here.

What to watch today (JST)

First, the result of Brazil's Round-of-16 tie should be known shortly. Then at 9 a.m. there is a last-16 match at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The rest of the Round of 16 is decided through 7 July, and the winners funnel toward the 9 July quarter-final between Morocco and France. The quarter-finals begin on 9 July near Boston and 10 July in Los Angeles. Of the three co-hosts, the USA and Mexico are still in; only Canada have gone out.
