While you slept

Into this morning JST, the Round of 16 got under way. At NRG Stadium in Houston, co-hosts Canada lost 0-3 to Morocco and were knocked out. Ounahi scored twice in the second half and Rahimi added a third late on, ending Canada's home World Cup at the last-16 stage; Canada also lost Sabiri to a first-half injury. Morocco become the first team into the quarter-finals and, as an African side, reach the last eight at a second straight World Cup for the first time. They play the winner of France v Paraguay in the quarter-finals on 9 July, near Boston.

Watching a tournament without Japan

Japan went out in the previous round, beaten 1-2 by Brazil, and their tournament is already over; there are no more Japan matches from today. But Brazil, the side that knocked them out, are still in and play their Round-of-16 tie at 5 a.m. JST on 6 July at MetLife Stadium near New York, against an opponent not yet decided. The path of the team that beat Japan can still be followed from here.

What to watch today (JST)

First, France v Paraguay is already under way from 6 a.m. in Philadelphia — Paraguay knocked Germany out on penalties, France are unbeaten so far, and the winner meets Morocco in the quarter-finals. Tomorrow at 5 a.m. Brazil begin their last 16. Of the three co-hosts, the USA and Mexico are still standing; only Canada have gone out.
