While you slept
Into this morning JST, the World Cup's Round of 32 moved into its final stretch. In Miami, Argentina saw off debutants Cape Verde 3-2 to reach the last 16. Cape Verde, an island nation of around 500,000 playing at their first World Cup, had already made history by coming through the group and reaching the knockout rounds; their run ended one step short of the last 16. One Round-of-32 tie remains — Colombia v Ghana later this morning — to fill the final place in the sixteen.
Watching a tournament without Japan
Japan went out in the previous round, beaten 1-2 by Brazil, and their tournament is already over; there are no more Japan matches from today. But Brazil, the side that knocked them out, are still in. They play their Round-of-16 tie at 5 a.m. JST on 6 July at MetLife Stadium near New York, against an opponent not yet decided. The path of the team that beat Japan can still be followed from here.
What to watch from here (JST)
First, at 10:30 a.m. today, Colombia v Ghana closes out the Round of 32. Then tomorrow, 5 July, the last 16 begins: co-hosts Canada v Morocco at 2 a.m. in Houston, and Paraguay v a to-be-decided opponent at 6 a.m. in Philadelphia. Mexico, England, Spain, Portugal and the USA are already among the sixteen, and from here the winners play on for a place in the quarter-finals.
