While you slept
Two Round-of-32 ties finished overnight into this morning. Co-hosts Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca. Quinones struck in the 22nd minute and Raul Jimenez added a second in the 31st, settling the game inside nine first-half minutes. It was Mexico's first World Cup knockout win since 1986 — a 40-year wait. The other tie, England v DR Congo in Atlanta, was dramatic. Brian Cipenga put DR Congo ahead in the 7th minute with his first international goal, and England trailed until the 75th. Then captain Harry Kane headed the equaliser and rifled home the winner in the 86th. It was the first time England had ever come from behind to win at a World Cup.
Watching a tournament without Japan
Japan went out in the previous round, beaten 1-2 by Brazil, and their tournament is already over; there are no more Japan matches from today. But Brazil, the side that knocked them out, are still in, and play Norway in the Round of 16 in the early hours of 6 July. The path of the team that beat Japan can still be followed from here.
What to watch from here (JST)
The Round of 32 is not finished. From 9 a.m. this morning, co-hosts USA face Bosnia and Herzegovina as the last places in the sixteen are filled. Then, in the early hours of 6 July, the last 16 begin: Brazil v Norway at 5 a.m. and Mexico v England at 9 a.m. The stage for that one is the Azteca, where Mexico have just marked their first knockout win in 40 years.
