While you slept

The night belonged to Cape Verde. A 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia in Houston took the World Cup debutants to three points and second place in Group H, and they became the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout rounds. They will meet Argentina in the Round of 32 on 3 July. In the other Group H game, in Guadalajara, Spain beat Uruguay 1-0 to win all three and top the group; Alex Baena got the goal after an error by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, and two-time world champions Uruguay went out. Group G was settled too: in Vancouver, Belgium thrashed New Zealand 5-1 to finish top, while in Seattle Egypt drew 1-1 with Iran to go through in second.

Japan today

Japan advanced as Group F runners-up, and next up is their Round-of-32 tie with Brazil — 29 June in Houston, kicking off at 2am on the 30th, Japan time. Takefusa Kubo, still managing a left-knee problem, is training separately with the knockouts in mind. Japan's record against Brazil is one win, two draws and eleven defeats; that single win came only last October.

What to watch today (JST)

The group stage finishes today. The Group L games that kicked off at 6am — Panama vs England and Croatia vs Ghana — are under way right now. At 8:30am the Group K finale brings title contenders Portugal against Colombia, plus DR Congo vs Uzbekistan. At 11am the Group J finale features Lionel Messi's Argentina against Jordan, with Algeria vs Austria alongside. After these the last 16 and the eight best-third places are all set.
