Host Canada beaten at home and miss top spot; Japan need only a draw at 8am tomorrow

In Vancouver, host nation Canada lost 1-2 to Switzerland and handed over top spot in Group B. In the same group, Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Qatar 3-1 and went through as one of the best third-placed teams, while Colombia saw off DR Congo 1-0 to reach the knockouts. Japan have no game today and turn to Friday's group decider with Sweden, where a draw would be enough to reach the last 32.

While you slept

In Vancouver, host nation Canada lost 1-2 to Switzerland. Rubén Vargas and Johan Manzambi put Switzerland ahead, and although substitute Promise David pulled one back early in the second half, Canada could not level. Switzerland finished top of Group B on seven points; Canada, beaten at home, went through as runners-up. In Seattle, Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Qatar 3-1, with 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegović among the scorers, to finish third but advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Qatar were eliminated. In Guadalajara, Colombia beat DR Congo 1-0 — Daniel Muñoz struck the winner on 76 minutes — to move to six points and seal a knockout place.

Japan today

Japan have no match today. They sit second in Group F, level with the Netherlands on four points and goal difference (+4) but behind on goals scored. Their decider with Sweden is on Friday 26 June at 8am (JST) at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. A draw or better would confirm a last-16 place; Sweden, by contrast, must win. Tunisia vs the Netherlands runs at the same time. Takefusa Kubo, with a left-knee problem, is likely to miss out, so how Ito, Doan and Nakamura break Sweden down on the right is the question to watch.

Tonight into tomorrow morning (JST)

First, at 7am, Scotland vs Brazil in Miami and Morocco vs Haiti in Atlanta — Brazil, chasing top spot, and Neymar are the draw. At 10am the Group A final round has South Africa vs Korea and Czechia vs host Mexico at the same time. Overnight, at 5am on the 26th, Group E brings Ecuador vs Germany and Curaçao vs Côte d'Ivoire. Then at 8am the Group F decider, Japan vs Sweden, kicks off.
