If Mbappe doesn't score on Saturday, the Golden Boot is Messi's

"He is available" — but not a promise to start

Asked at Friday's pre-match press conference whether Kylian Mbappe would be involved, Didier Deschamps kept it short: "He is available, that's what I will say." He did not go further. Not that Mbappe would start, not that he would come on.

Mbappe's ankle had been sore since before the semi-final, and France started him against Spain anyway. French reporting through Thursday still raised the possibility that he would sit this one out. Friday's line at least removed that. Deschamps also acknowledged the Golden Boot chase as a motivation for his captain, and called it a legitimate one.

One assist apart

The scoring race is not what the raw numbers suggest. Mbappe has 8. Messi has 8. Level on top, apparently. But the tiebreaker is assists, and Messi has four to Mbappe's three. If both stop where they are, the Golden Boot goes to Messi.

Which makes Saturday the opposite of a dead rubber for Mbappe. Score and he is on nine, and Messi has to answer in Sunday's final. Fail to score and he can only watch. Goals in the third-place playoff count toward the tournament total.

England have two men in range: Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, on six each. Closing a two-goal gap in one match is a lot to ask, but it is not out of reach. Michael Olise leads the tournament outright with five assists.

Saliba is out with his back

France will be without a central pillar of their defence. William Saliba went down off the ball against Spain and left the field saying "my back is gone." It is a back problem he carried into the tournament, and surgery has been reported as likely. He will not play on Saturday.

Who replaces him has not come from the France camp. Ibrahima Konate and Maxence Lacroix have been named in local reporting, but that is projection, not an announcement. France conceded twice in six matches before Spain; how they rebuild that line without Saliba will only be clear when the team sheet lands.

Deschamps' 27th match

This is also the last 90 minutes Deschamps will manage France. The semi-final was his 26th World Cup match in charge, passing Helmut Schoen's 25 with West Germany to become the most-capped manager in the competition. Saturday is number 27, and the last.

His words at the press conference: "I know that the end of the road is [on Saturday]. No one is going to cry here, but I know that I will miss the French team. I have had the privilege for 14 years to experience magical but also difficult moments." Appointed in 2012, champion in 2018, beaten in the 2022 final by Argentina, stopped 2-0 by Spain in 2026. The ending is a match neither he nor his players wanted.

Tuchel will rotate

England's situation is different. Straight after the semi-final Tuchel said flatly that none of his players and none of France's wanted to play this game. He has since signalled he will change his side, managing fatigue and the Miami heat. Reece James went off injured against Argentina. Jarell Quansah, having served the two-match suspension from his red card against Mexico, is available.

For England the third-place playoff is familiar and unwelcome. They have played it twice and lost twice: 1-2 to hosts Italy in 1990, 0-2 to Belgium in 2018. Lose on Saturday and it is three from three.

What to watch

Whether Mbappe scores, because it lands directly on Messi's Sunday. Whether Kane or Bellingham go after the two-goal gap. Who lines up in a France defence without Saliba. And what both team sheets say about how seriously each side is taking this.
