The list that emptied out

For two days the England camp read like a casualty ward. Rice was down with illness, Guehi with a hamstring, James with a hamstring, and the doubtful column kept getting longer. Then all three trained with the rest of the group at Inter Miami's facilities on Friday.

"Yeah, of course, that's the best news," Tuchel said. "We had everyone available in training, which we of course like. We have the full choice except for our suspended player, so that's the good news."

Quansah misses the quarterfinal after FIFA handed him a two-match ban for his red card against Mexico. Jordan Henderson is the one man missing outright: he had wrist surgery after falling during the celebrations of that win at the Estadio Azteca, and is in Miami supporting the squad rather than playing in it. James is back on the grass but has been managed carefully and is not expected to start.

Norway have reported nothing at all. No injuries, no suspensions.

The pressure both coaches keep handing back

Norway are at their first World Cup since 1998 and in the last eight for the first time in their history. They knocked out the Ivory Coast, then Brazil. And they would like everyone to remember who the favourite is here.

"England has more pressure than us, but we put more pressure on our performance," Stale Solbakken said. "When the game has started, I don't think the players think about the pressure. It's 11 vs. 11 -- pressure is more about the talk beforehand."

Erling Haaland had said much the same a day earlier: "There are some clear favourites out there, England is one of them, and all of you should put every single pressure on the England lads."

Solbakken also declined the marquee that has been built around the match. Asked whether it boils down to Kane or Haaland outscoring the other, he answered: "I think it's Norway vs. England, but it's not a secret that Kane is England's number one match-winner and Erling is the same for us." Haaland has seven goals in this tournament. Kane has six.

The heat is the third team

England trained in 33C on Friday, and the humidity made it feel hotter. Kickoff is expected at around 34C. This is a squad that has played indoors twice and in the rain three times. Miami is the first furnace they have walked into.

Solbakken has already changed how Norway prepare. "We are training very lightly -- we haven't done much hard work," he said. "We have tactical sessions, but in a lower tempo. We haven't trained for longer periods, but it's about being fresh for tomorrow."

He was blunt about what the weather does to the football itself. "There will be a game within the game to have the ball. Especially if the weather is like it is now. To chase the ball the whole time is very, very tiring. Both teams need to keep the ball, otherwise it will be a long, long game."

That is the honest picture of a 34C quarterfinal. Not a running contest. Two teams trying very hard not to run.

What to watch when it kicks off

Start with the team sheet: does Rice start, and does James get on at all. Then watch the tempo of the first fifteen minutes — if both sides look content to pass sideways, that is not caution, it is arithmetic. Watch how Norway get the ball to Haaland when they cannot press for long stretches. And watch whether England's midfield can hold possession in heat that charges you twice for every turnover. The winner goes to Atlanta on July 15 to meet Argentina or Switzerland.
